Mark Stiles. Professor of Technology Supported Learning, Staffordshire University: Control freaks in a sharing world - a bit of dilemma?

Institutional strategy and policy are being increasingly challenged by technological change. Traditionally held views of “control” and “ownership” are becoming difficult to maintain in the face of the deployment of service-oriented architectures by organisations, and the rapid adoption of the use of “Web 2.0” tools by learners (and others). The growing “learner-focus” of educational practice combines with these factors to present not just organisational issues, but fundamental questions about the professional culture within institutions. In the context of these, Mark will discuss “control” and “ownership” of systems, applications and business and educational processes, and in particular, how technological change is making them impossible to align in previously orthodox ways. Institutions will need methods for ensuring their strategies and policies are appropriate for enabling the practices of the future, and Mark will outline his emerging ideas on how organisational thinking might be assisted in doing this.

Richard Millwood, Ultralab: The Ultraversity project

The Ultraversity project began in 2003, to develop a degree focussing on the student taking action to improve the work context. It is designed to offer individual fulfillment and assure organisational improvement. It has combined five approaches - inquiry-based learning, community online, patchwork text assessment, exhibition for dissertation and personalised learning. This innovation has been developed, and the degree programme delivered, as an action research by a distributed team working in its own online community of practice. The first 140 graduates will be meet in November 2006 for the first time to receive their certificates. This presentation will describe this degree in further detail, discuss the challenges it has faced and provide evidence of its success.

Rob Koper, OUNL The Need for an Open-source Infrastructure for Lifelong Competence Development in Europe.

This keynote addresses three related problems: a) The need for an overview of all possible formal and informal learning resources; b) The need to find the most appropriate learning resource, given personal preferences and characteristics; c) The need for competence assessment, given the fact that persons learn from various formal and informal sources. The basic concepts used by TENCompetence and the solution being developed by the project are presented.

Bill Olivier, Director of Development (Systems and technology) JISC:.
Bill Olivier discussed the dynamics of innovation, and how these relate to Learning Design and the e-Framework. There are two sets of slides available here, the presentation, and slides on the e-framework which were not shown at the workshop for lack of time.
