Below is an example of the source for a LD content file:

<?xml version="1.0"?>

<html xmlns:ld="http://www.imsglobal.org/xsd/imsld_v1p0" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">	<head>
<TITLE/>
</head>
<body>Use this text area to discuss the topic with the group. Add to the discussion by entering text and clicking OK:

<ld:set-property ref="prop-c8cdc323-ae47-ee24-d096-ff2a5b2b6f50" property-of="self" view="value"/>

</body>
</html>

This is a simple example. The user has to produce this kind of content that directly references the IDs of the Properties in the LD manifest. What I'm trying to say is, that for all our attempts to simplify the LD authoring process in the authoring tool there comes a point where the user has to produce this sort of thing. Now if you want to make that simple then we are entering Dreamweaver territory (and I'm not about to write a WYSIWYG XHTML Editor!).

@Dai:

I agree. That's why I believe the way forward is a 2-pronged approach, as I mentioned above. Properties at Level B are open-ended things and can be exploited for many (or any) different usages, and some that we haven't even thought of yet. Even at the most trivial level, it is useful to store a Boolean property as a flag (Learner X did this or didn't do that, or has this preference). In an ideal world, IMS LD would be used in a particular use-case driven tool and Properties & Conditions would be set "behind the scenes" as artefacts of the given scenario. However, because ReCourse is a general LD Editor we cannot it limit it in this way. You know, if we attack the problem by firstly letting the user create/edit and model the Ps & Cs in a more friendly way then we may be able to "capture" them as templates.

@Mark:

Don't worry! I've thought about that.

But you know, when we talk about trying to simplify all of this I'm not convinced it is entirely possible in a general LD editing tool; and it is the IMSLD content that makes me think this. Not only does the user have to create a UoL that results in the manifest file, but they also have to create IMSLD content XML files with embedded references to the LD's Property IDs. (An analogue of this is SCORM content. You have to have technical people to produce the JavaScript runtime content files). Added to this is the Assessment part. You also have to start referencing properties for QTI. I think that producing a general-purpose all-singing IMS LD/QTI Editor ain't gonna be easy for the end user! And we haven't even started on IMS/IEEE Metadata yet!

Dai,

If we use widgets instead, would properties still be set? E.g., we might want to go down a particular path if >50% vote for it.

Phil,

One thing I found a real pain in Reload was, having set up a property, and wanting to manipulate it in an imsld-content form, I'd have to search the manifest for its reference and paste it into the set/view-property tag. If this was automated (a form builder?) it would be a BIG time saver!

Cheers

Hi

The main places I've come across Level B being used are
a) creating conditions for branching paths
b) uploading documents using properties
But I haven't seen many examples in use.

I've got two more general comments on Level B authoring

1) it's not clear to me who the users are going to be. At level be we are seeking to make authoring available to any teacher who has the time to get to grips with the ideas behind the specification, and I think we are more or less there. At level B it is not so clear. We may find that dealing with properties and conditions is too complex for most teachers to deal with even if they have a grasp of the general ideas of the specification.
If that is the case, then it might be better to creating an improved but still demanding interface for people who are prepared to grapple with the abstractions of properties and conditions, and concentrate on providing good templates for people who just want to create (for example) a conditional branching structure.
If we are going to do that, then this forum discussion is an important way of finding out what kind of templates we might offer.

We don't have much evidence on this from IMS-LD. So one way would to move forward would be to look at similar environments (for example Authorware?). If anyone has any experience on how other environments it would be great if they could contribute it.

2) Improved and more flexible services might be able to take the place of level B in some contexts. I know that someone (Liverpool Hope I think) simulated a forum in level b, but with the Widget server that's no longer necessary. Similarly a voting system could have been created in level B, but now we have one of them as a widget. There may be other possible examples (upload?)

All the best

Dai

As we move toward implementing Level B (properties and conditions) in the TENCompetence Learning Design Editor ("ReCourse") I would like to invite feedback about how people see Level B being used in the real world. Therefore, I welcome comments and thoughts about this issue in this forum topic.

Adding Level B to a Learning Design allows for more powerful Units of Learning. Level B adds properties, global elements, monitor services and conditions. Some of these are set in the manifest XML file while the global elements are set in the actual resource files (imsldcontent). Clearly,we have to forge a link between the editor and the content files and make the editing of these properties and conditions somewhat easier.

What can Level B do for us? As has been noted elsewhere (Koper, Burgos) Level B can provide for the following cases:

	•	Collaborative Learning
•	Adaptive Learning and personalisation
•	Conditional Text
•	Runtime tracking
•	New forms of assessment
•	Modelling of ePortfolios

And much more...

For me, as a developer of ReCourse I am interested in how Level B can be implemented in software, in the editor. I have thought about this over the last few weeks and I suggest a two-pronged approach:

	1.	Since Level B provides an extensive modelling language I would like to allow the informed user to fully manipulate it in a graphical mode. I am thinking of comparisons with UML type diagram editors, or other GUI-based work-flow editors...XCode...HyperCard....??? On the other hand, as this is an "expert" mode there also needs to be provision for an easier route, so...

	2.	Define use cases where Level B is exploited in given situations, and create user-friendly and intuitive interfaces to create the same. For example... a simple representation of a conditional situation ("if situation A exists then allow situation B else do situation C"), a wizard to set up an assessment-based Unit of Learning. In other words we could provide the user with, say, 6 or so most useful scenarios that would automatically (and invisibly) create the necessary properties and conditions in the UoL (given the prerequisite activities and environments, or maybe even these could be automatically created as part of the process).

I appreciate all feedback!

Cheers,

A new version 1.5.4 of ReCourse the LD Editor tool is available at:

http://www.tencompetence.org/ldauthor/

The new features and fixes are:

+ Added "New Item" wizard for adding Resource Items in Item Edtors. Can now add quick Resource text, or reference existing Resource.
+ Added "New Resource" wizard for adding Resources in Resources panel. Can now add quick Resource text, or reference existing File.
+ Removed "Save Changes" button from Organiser Resource Properties View (Organiser will auto-save)

The first two features mean that it is now much easier to add Items in the Item Editors and to add Resources in the Resources tab/pane. For example, adding a new Item in the Item Editor also adds a referenced Resource and HTML file automatically. The user doesn't have to worry about that anymore if they don't want to.

It was only yesterday I released version 1.5.2 of the LD Editor, but today I have added some essential features that I thought it was worth issuing another release...

A new version 1.5.3 of ReCourse the LD Editor tool is available at:

http://www.tencompetence.org/ldauthor/

The new features and fixes are:

+ When user creates a new Learning Object a default Resource Item, Resource and HTML file are automatically created
+ When user creates a new Send Mail a default Learner recipient is set, if available
+ When user creates a new Index Search a default class string is added
+ When user creates a new Conference a default Resource Item, Resource and HTML file are automatically created
+ When user creates a new Conference a default Learner Participant is added, if available
+ When user creates a new Vote Widget (Conference) a default Staff Manager is added, if available
+ When user creates a new Activity a default Description Item, Resource and HTML file are automatically created
+ Default Learning Objectives and Prerequisites Item and files are created for a new default LD
+ The "New Activity/Group" wizard now provides a simple description text box - a default Description Item, Resource and HTML file are automatically created
+ Added an "Edit" button to the Items Table Panel - user can edit corresponding Resource's file if present
* Added Preference to use Rich Text Editor or not

These new additions ensure that the user doesn't have to worry about default objects not conforming to the LD spec. So, for example, when you add a new Learning Activity, a description file is added automatically. You can also edit it in the wizard dialog box.

I'm copying a post that I made on the http://partners.tencompetence.org site. When looking at the original post in this thread, it looks like the "Discovery server URL" needs to be updated (which is described in the text below).

Ruud

"Hello,

End of January WP3 released the PCM 1.0, which has so many changes that there's no backward/upward compatibility between the old and new versions. As you might have noticed, this causes problems. Hopefully the text below will help resolve most of those problems.

To use the PCM 1.0, take the following steps:
1. Download the client (for instance via http://www.tencompetence.org/PCM/download.html).
2. Install the client.
3. Update the setting "File => Preferences... => Connection => Discovery Server URL" to "http://pcm.tencompetence.org/TENCDiscovery/servers" and click OK.

Step 3 makes sure you use the new PCM server (if you have http://193.145... you are still using the old server).

When starting the PCM, it might try to reopen the last Competence Profile used by you. This will fail. If the PCM shows a box asking for only your username / password (instead of a box to create a new user), enter the username and password you used on the old server.

In case you didn't remember your username and password: the file C:\Documents and Settings\RLEMMERS\org.tencompetence\tencomp-workspace\conduit.xml contains them (note: this should change in the future). The path might be slightly different, because the conduit.xml file is stored in the location of your Windows/Linux/Apple user profile.

Groeten,

This message has been posted on behalf of a user:

When I launch pcm I'm asked to select a competence profile.
The next dialog box asks for a username and id which I don't have and cant see how to create.
I then cancel that dialog and am taken to a select a competance profile dialog which says errors occurred while fetching profiles.
Presumably this is what you were saying about the new server.
I understand what this means but The series of screens I get taken through seem to point to the old server.
Also I couldn't see any registered communities and no option to register a community.
Do I have to start by registering a community?

Hi,

An important remark regarding the official version 1.0 PCM client (Jan. 2008): it only works when using an installation of a version 1.0 PCM server. The version running on the 193.145.44.9:8080 is an old server.
The same goes the other way around: the old client only works with the old server.

You can use http://pcm.fmi.uni-sofia.bg/TENCDiscovery/servers as the Discovery URL for the 1.0 server (and we will use a tencompetence.org domain in the near future).

My apologies for this inconvenience.

Hi Wolfgang,

many thanks for looking at "ReCourse" and your review. This is exactly the type of feedback we are looking for! For me, as I'm not a teacher or learning designer I need user-driven UI ideas. I'm noting your comments so we can see what ideas we can use.

The Properties Panel is supposed to be the "expert" view, if you like, of all the LD Properties for the selected object. In fact it is hidden by default (if not, close it!). It's there if you want to dig into the details. So what we haven't got yet is the simpler view of this stuff, but we are working on it...

We're gathering user feedback such as yours now so we can attempt to simplify things. I've already added visual cues to the interface so as to show whether an Activity has an Environment, for example.

BTW - there is a "Checker" view panel that tells you if anything is missing from the LD.

Thanks once again!

Phil and all,

Did a little review on ReCourse on my blog: http://lnx-otecexp-009v.ou.nl/wg/wordpress/index.php/2008/01/30/new-ims-ld-editor/

Here's a short feedback to the ReCourse editor. In general, it's much improved. Some things though, could still be simplified, by removing it from the main view to "deep space 9".

The properties panel is a teacher's best nightmare :-) Too technical. This could go to a right click menu entry called "properties panel" or similar, but otherwise hidden. Instead a "teacher notes" panels would perhaps be useful here.

Another suggestion is to use a "add a rule..." entry to the right click menu, and then give users the options to e.g. add completion rule and other stuff.

Because at present it is difficult to grasp where content has been added and what's still empty (and required), I suggest to maybe follow some social networking sites that provide "your profile is 80% complete" help. It can be divided up to the individual components of a UoL (roles, resources) so users see what is there and where they need to do more work.

I hope this is somewhat helpful
Best wishes
Wolfgang

As part of the PCM 1.0 release, we also offer to use the extended CopperCore Learning
Design Runtime Environment. This system allows users to run IMS Learning
Designs and combines the work previously done in the CopperCore and SLeD
projects with the new Learning Design services developed within the TEN
Competence project.

CopperCore comprises SCORM additions and SLeD.

This Software is optional and not included in the PCM 1.0 package by default, as it is quite a
large download (55mb). If you wish to download this, then please visit...

Today I got the following message from UPF, that's hosting the server:
"Since yesterday (15-01-2008) afternoon the server of TenCompetence is temporarily down for internal reasons in the UPF. We are working in the activation of the server.

As soon as posible (this afternoon), the server will work correctly.

Thank you and sorry."

So the server is currently unavailable. Perhaps it's also related to the performance decrease noticed by "freeware".

If you downloaded the PCM Client and find the installation is a bit complicated, please wait for the 1.0 final version and keep an eye on this forum. That version will include an installer taking the workload of putting the PCM code into the right place on your computer and create shortcuts to run it more easily.

Hi,

The beta version of the WP6 Widget Server can now be found here:

http://www.tencompetence.org/ldruntime/widgetserver/

The current download build is a complete system, incorporating CCRT, SLeD and the widget server. (otherwise it can be tricky to set the bits up separately as there are many steps involved) The system ships with two widgets included - a chat widget and discussion/forum widget. There is also documentation on how to include the widgets into your own Learning Designs.
