TENCompetence partner Giunti Labs recently hosted a meeting of the Web Services In Learning Group (WSIL) entitled "European perspectives on the application of web services to learning" in Sestri Levante (Italy) on 13-14 November 2006,. The participants consisted for the most part of North American industry and major players in the e-learnig field within the framework of the (WSIL) workgroup (e.g. Eduworks, ITG Competencies Group, Microsoft, Mindleaders, Monitor Group, Opn Design, Oracle, Plateau, Questionmark, Saba, SAP, Skillsoft, SumTotal, Sun Microsystems, Thomson Learning and Giunti Labs). The meeting included a presentation (see link) of the TENCompetence project from a SOA perspective by A.Marco Luccini of Giunti Labs.
As part of the project goal to provide new interoperable ways of representing and sharing pedagogically complex models of collaborative learning activities, the team at TENCompetence have been making use of the IMS Learning Design specification for the production, storage, search, retrieval and quality rating of learning activities and units of learning.
As well as their R&D activities in the field ofpedagogical and learning activity modeling, the team will select and adapt existing tools and create new ones where necessary with a view to creating components that can be integrated as services within the Integrated TENCompetence System.
Quality assessment is becoming an increasingly strategic issue for ODL (Open and Distance Learning) service providers and users. As the market for ODL services is opening up in Europe, their number in the field is greater than ever. However, end users presently don't have any way of assessing their quality.Daniel Burgos has a keynote speech: "Quality in eLearning Standards and IMS Learning Design", available here

Theme: "Advanced Technologies for Life-Long Learning"
Life-long learning becomes much more achievable as versatile infrastructures for mobile communication and portable Web access emerge. Supplementary to this, social software for supporting learners in sharing common views and actually build authentic understanding on relevant themes for learning needs to be conceptualized and experimented with.
The new roles for teachers, coaches, mentors, and fellow learners are attracting the increasing attention of researchers. Common efforts are being made to characterize learner profiles and to label portfolios on earlier learning. This conference opens its door for presenting and discussing vivid, creative solutions and experimental work at the point of collaborative LEARNING via advanced media.
The conference will bring together people who are working on the design, development, use and evaluation of technologies that will be the foundation of the advanced technologies for life-long Learning.
